ENTSOG launches the ‘ENTSOG Roadmap 2050 for gas grids’ at the ENTSOG Conference 2019

23 dic 2019
The European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSOG) hosted its third annual conference (11 December 2019), at which it launched the ENTSOG Roadmap 2050 for gas grids as well as celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary.

Participants, including representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission, Member States and a range of gas and electricity industry representatives, were sharing ideas on the presented ENTSOG Roadmap 2050 and on the European Green Deal Communication, which was published the same day.

In the ENTSOG Roadmap 2050, the European gas TSOs propose how to make gas grids ready for the transition of the energy sector by looking into pathways for decarbonising the gas grids by 2050. ENTSOG Roadmap highlights seven recommendations as TSOs’ input to the European Green Deal :

1. Keep one EU gas market for renewable, decarbonised and low-carbon gases.

2. Establish principles for new gases transportation such as hydrogen and biomethane.

3. Establish a standardised EU-wide Guarantees of Origin framework for renewable, decarbonised and low-carbon gases ensuring transferability across borders.

4. Establish regulatory framework for Sector coupling based on a whole system approach – Hybrid Energy System.

5. Establish framework concept of regulatory sandbox at EU and national level under supervision of NRAs.

6. For Gas Quality Handling establish an EU-wide hydrogen threshold assessment and alignment at interconnection points to prevent market fragmentation.

7. Develop EU Regulatory approach for CO2 infrastructure, including Third Party Access.

Jan Ingwersen, ENTSOG General Director said: For Gas Transmission System Operators, this is a transition, from the current system based on natural gas to renewable, decarbonised and lowcarbon gases. Therefore, we invite you to the discussion on how to maintain the last 10 years achievements of the building of a competitive and secure gas market to the move towards a Hybrid Energy System, building on synergies between electricity and gas, and on renewable and decarbonised gases.
