The Programme Committee is now soliciting the submission of papers to be included in a new workshop on Sustainable Waste Management at Universities scheduled for Thursday 3rd October, h. 9:00 - 12:50 (see sessions G11 and G12 in the symposium programme).

Universities can be considered just like small towns where students and staff spend much part of their days working, studying, eating and in many cases even living inside University buildings. All these activities produce a wide variety of waste streams: from liquid and solid hazardous waste from the research labs to assimilated urban waste (plastic, glass, paper, food waste and so on…).
In the last years, in the framework of the Agenda 2030 objectives (SDG 12 in particular), the awareness on the waste management problem inside Universities has increased and now Universities are taking a leading role in educating people about the need to develop a sustainable society, as part of the so-called Third Mission.
Furthermore, Universities with their diverse nature of waste streams generated from academic buildings and residential areas, provide a good opportunity to understand the options for sustainable waste management for wider applications.

Among activities developed to improve waste management the more diffused are: (i) waste production monitoring and analysis (i.e. quantification and characterization of waste streams), (ii) academic community engagement strategies (through events, interviews, conferences, open days, flash mobs, web sites, app…) (iii) creation of a strong interconnection between Procurement Department and Waste Management in order to close the loop of materials (i.e. actual Circular Economy).

The workshop is an opportunity to compare, share and discuss good practices in University waste management developed around the world, intended not only as correct and safe collection, transportation, processing and disposal of the waste streams, but primarily as reducing the amount of waste to be disposed of (zero-waste strategy).

Waste manager, professors, researchers, technicians (in general, all stakeholders) are invited to send their contribution no later than 20th August
Articles should be prepared using the template provided and submitted using the online submission form. Contributions in the form of short papers (3-4 pages) will also be accepted.

SPECIAL ISSUE ANNOUNCEMENT

Authors of selected leading papers from this workshop will be invited to submit extended versions of their manuscript for possible publication in a special issue of DETRITUS - Multidisciplinary Journal for Waste Resources and Residues edited by Cisa Publisher and now indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) / Clarivate Analitics / Web of Science.

Detritus is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal which publishes papers on waste resources, residue management and engineering. The journal is aimed at extending the “waste” concept by opening up the field to other waste-related disciplines (earth science, applied microbiology, environmental science, architecture, art, law, forensic engineering, etc.) welcoming strategic, review and opinion papers. Detritus is a double open journal: free access for readers and free submission for authors in order to promote the transfer of scientific knowledge with no economical constraints. Accepted papers will be immediately processed and made available on line with a DOI number.

The journal is currently indexed in Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and in Google Scholar. DOAJ and Scopus are reviewing the indexing application.
