Loïc Fauchon, elected President of the World Water Council, will state his priorities on Friday 7 December 2018 at COP24 in Katowice, Poland, for Water Day
- Today, 40 % of the world’s population is impacted by the lack of water (1)
- By 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water stressed areas (2)
- 80 % of countries indicate a lack of financing to reach their national goals on access to drinking water (3)
- By 2035, energy use will increase by 35%, resulting in an increase in water use of 85% (4)
On the eve of COP24, and at the outcome of the 8th General Assembly, the Board of Governors has unanimously elected Loïc Fauchon as President of the World Water Council.
“The water situation is fragile, and this situation is even more critical as we have the responsibility to provide water for tomorrow’s needs while meeting today’s demand. This also requires sharing water for humans as much as for the environment,” said Loïc Fauchon.
The President of the World Water Council will have the opportunity to state his priorities on Friday 7 December 2018 at COP24 in Katowice, Poland, for a special Water Event, where he will be providing concluding remarks.
A new strategy to respond to water crises
The Board of Governors will oversee the implementation of a strategy focused on water security, access to water and sanitation, energy, health, and education.
This work will be incorporated into the preparations of the 9th World Water Forum, which will be held in Dakar in 2021 in partnership with the Senegalese government.
On 30 November and 1 December 2018, more than 250 members from 35 countries gathered in Marseille, France. The 8th General Assembly marked the end of the mandate and presidency of Benedito Braga and allowed the definition of the main lines of action for the next three years.
The World Water Council brings together a diversity of organizations mobilized to advance the water cause by involving UN agencies, the World Bank, governments, NGOs, public and private companies, and universities. Through their experience and know-how, the Council’s main mission is to provide practical responses to the global water crisis.
Loïc Fauchon has appointed Asma El-Kasmi, Director of Cooperation and Communication of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water of Morocco, as Vice-President to support the implementation of the strategy.

About Loïc Fauchon
Loïc Fauchon is President of the World Water Council and President of the Water Supply Company of Marseille.
He was President of the World Water Council from 2005 to 2012 and re-elected in 2018. He directly contributed to the organization of the World Water Forums in Marrakech (1997), The Hague (2000), Kyoto (2003), Mexico City (2006), Istanbul (2009) and Marseille (2012).
Loic Fauchon graduated in 1970 from the Institute of Political Studies of Aix-en-Provence. He began his career working as a civil servant in public services and several local authorities - the Verdon River Syndicate, the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the Departmental Council of the Bouches-du-Rhône and the City of Marseille, where he served as Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Marseille and as Secretary General.
He was elected Mayor of Trets from 1989 to 1997.
Appointed as General Director of the Water Supply Company of Marseille in 1991, he became Chief Executive Officer in 1997, leading a group of 15 companies with 1,800 staff. He now serves as President of the company.
Understanding the vital importance of water throughout the world, and after having led several humanitarian field missions, he created the NGO "Trans-Sahara Caravanes Sans Frontières" in 1977 to respond to humanitarian emergency situations. He also created a specific emergency response body with the Water Supply Company of Marseille, called “Waterhelp.”
He is a member of several international and non-governmental organizations and of the High-Level Expert and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP).
He was appointed CEO of SAFIM (Marseille International Exhibitions LLC) in 2014.
He was awarded the rank of Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour in 2003.
