What future for landfills?

22 mag 2015
Join the IWWG workshops at the Sardinia 2015 Symposium and be one of the key players in the definition of future innovations and best practices in landfill management!

The Sustainable Landfill Management IWWG workshop will focus on decision making processes for the completion of the aftercare phase: critical issues will be addressed, such as:
- how long-term emissions can be incorporated in completion procedures?
- what minimal requirements should be set and in what situation?

The role of enhanced landfill management practices on the acceleration of waste stabilization and landfill completion will be discussed during the IWWG workshop on Landfill Aeration: successful case studies and state of the art approaches will be reviewed and the current challenges and constraints to the spread of landfill aeration practices worldwide will be discussed.

But if on the one hand landfills can be considered as a final sink for elements and compounds and therefore the rapid waste stabilization and completion of the aftercare phase should be pursued, on the other hand landfills can play a role in the circular economy, where material loops should be closed by direct waste recycling as well as by mining of historic (and future) landfills.

The different roles a landfill can play and the realistic possibilities for material and energy recovery will be the key issues in the Workshop on Urban and Landfill Mining.
